Music
Together classes are based on the belief that music is as much a basic life
skill as walking and talking and that all children can learn to sing in tune,
keep a beat and participate with confidence and pleasure in the music of many cultures,
provided that their early environment supports such learning. By emphasizing actual music experiences
rather than concepts about music, we introduce children to the pleasures of
music making instead of passively receiving it from CDs and television. Integral to our program is the idea that
young children respond best to music when surrounded by those with whom they
have a close bond. Consequently, the
active participation of parents and caregivers is an essential part of the rich
musical environment that we create.
What is a
Music Together class like?
6 to12
children ages birth to five and their parents or caregivers (nanny, babysitter,
grandparent) meet for 45 minutes each week for 10 weeks to experience new
songs, chants, small and large motor activities and instrumental jam
sessions. Both adults and children sit
in the circle and participate. The
teacher provides the adults with education that helps them understand how to
participate and the importance of having fun with their child. Children have many opportunities to create
and play- making up rhythm patterns, making up new words to songs, making up
movements to express a sound. Some
children will simply stare and study the experiences, as they absorb the
musically rich environment. Other
children will sing, play and dance freely because they are in a comfortable,
encouraging environment, and because they know the songs and chants from the
songbook, CD, and tape that they play at home.
Each class has ritual features, which the children need, and enjoy- the
hello song, instrumental play along, a lullaby, and the good-bye song. 8 to 10 other experiences are included in
each class ranging from free movement to songs in unusual meter.
Children
may or may not participate as they choose and are given the freedom to respond
according to their developmental level.
The class experience, reinforced by listening to tapes and parent
involvement, stimulates learning at home through play.
All classes
are mixed ages from birth to five. A
child’s music development benefits greatly form early exposure as an
infant. Three and four year olds
benefit form having the opportunity to be leaders in the mixed-aged
classroom. Activities focus on
adult/child interaction rather than child/child, so children of different ages
(such as siblings) can enjoy classes together.
Regardless of your
background in music, you can give your child a love of music. Adult
participation is easy, non-threatening, and fun. Parent enjoyment is the single most important factor in fostering
a love of music-making in children. Do
something wonderful for yourself and your child and join us for some family
music fun!
